The crab season won't last forever, so I'm trying to enjoy it as much as possible. I buy it live and cook it according to a variation of Alex and Jamie Oliver's directions. It's simply delicious and the kids love it too (I spare them the live cooking part though).

The weather was so nice on this weekend
that we decided to have breakfast on the patio. We were just going to have the traditional tea/hot chocolate with the "tartines" of bread, butter and jam, but I felt such a great weather deserved something a little bit fancier, so I prepared some waffles.
Over the years I've tested many waffle recipes, and settled for this one because it's as close as it gets from the real Belgian waffle yet so much faster to make than the original recipe. It won't be more than 8 minutes between the time you start collecting all the ingredients to the moment you'll have the first waffles ready to serve.
For about 12 waffles, you'll need:
- 2 large eggs (yolks and whites separated)
- 6 tbsp (85g) butter
- 2 cups (250g) flour
- 1 1/4 cup (400 ml) milk (ideally whole milk but I used 2% and it worked great)
Melt the butter in the microwave abd reserve.
In a large bowl, roughly mix the egg yolks, flour and about half of the milk. You'll get lumps, which you can either try to fight by beating as long as you can, or - definitely my preferred way - just use an immersion mixer to mix it all, it takes a minute and gives you a perfect lump-free dough. Add the remaining milk and the melted butter, mix well.
Beat the egg whites, then add to the mix with a wooden spatula. The egg whites will break, but that's ok, just try your best to keep the whole dough fluffy enough.
Bake the waffles with the waffle maker, pouring just enough dough to fill in the mold - don't worry about filling the extreme sides, they will fill automatically when you close the lid.
Serve them warm, with any toppings you'd like. My favorite is the plain confectioner's sugar, as it enhances the flavor of the waffle without totally hiding it. Other widely appreciated toppings include fresh strawberries, blueberries and whipped cream.
This has to be one of the best French/American breakfast in our family!

If you're like me, the idea of filling up the lunchbox every morning with something healthy and kid-friendly isn't exactly the most exciting moment of the day. So, to make things a bit more interesting, I extended the traditional plastic lunchbox arsenal with 2 wonderful tools. They're called Thermos and Laptop Lunches.
Today I'll tell you all about Thermos. I'll cover the Laptop Lunches in another post soon.
I buy the small one (Food Jar 2330 to be exact) for my son Thomas in Kindergarten, so he can eat directly from it. If you have a kid in elementary school you know that they have to trade play time for food time, so go with what gets them their food fast! You can buy it from Target or order it online from Thermos website.
It's big enough for a full lunch, keeps the food hot until lunch time, and fits easily in any traditional plastic lunchbox. It's also theoritically lead free and doesn't have any of these potentially toxic plastics.
One tip to keep the food hot longer: rinse the Thermos with hot water before you pour the contents in it.
And of course don't forget to add a spoon or a fork, otherwise it's not quite an enjoyable lunch experience!

Ever since I moved to this country I've been a bit obsessed by making sure whatever I eat is decently healthy. And it got much worse after I had the kids... I think my first real shock had to do with those mini ziploc bags filled with Cheerios that kids carry with them in the stroller. I grew up in the French country side where a lot of what we ate came directly from the surrounding farms, so the sight of Cheerios in a bag as "healthy kid's food" was a bit revolting.
Of course with time (and with the arrival of my second kid!) I got to understand the benefits of this snacking technique, but I still believe that there are many easy ways to get our kids into healthier eating habits. I don't pretend to have the perfect answers (eventhough I'm French so I'm supposed to be arrogant, especially when it comes to food!), but at the request of other busy Moms I've decided to share some of the ideas and things I cook for the kiddies, in the hope to get them to appreciate good food as early as possible - without driving their moms crazy.
